I was so pleasantly surprised by my road trip in Northern California earlier this fall that I figured I’d do a round up of some great spots you can drive to if you live in the area. With the incredible variety of landscapes and towns both big and small, there’s something for everyone, no matter your tastes!
Manteca, California –
Have to give it up to my original hometown! There’s a tranquility in the air here that you can’t quite explain. I absolutely loved driving the long farm roads with beautiful orchards surrounding me on either side. Definitely make it a point to stop here if you’re close enough to pass through.
Monterey, California –
I visited this stunning seaside town several years ago and have been yearning to go back. They have one of the most magnificent aquariums I’ve ever seen, and they’re close to Salinas if you’re a Steinbeck fan! Also, can’t forget to eat some amazing seafood here.
San Francisco, California –
I mean, it’s San Francisco, JUST GO!
Yosemite, California –
I regret not having time to visit Yosemite on my last trip. I’ve heard it’s beautiful! Like serious eye candy if you love nature. I would recommend camping or a rustic hotel.
Sonoma, California –
Get here early so you can winery-hop your way through the day. Sonoma is in close proximity to uber-popular Napa, but has some equally great wineries and vineyards to visit.
Lake Tahoe, California –
Tons of outdoor activities coupled with equally great places to eat and even places to gamble if you’re on the Nevada side. You can be low-key and high-key at the same time!
Big Trees, California –
When you can’t get to Yosemite, head to Big Trees. Equally as astounding nature and some great hikes await you.
Eureka, California –
Honestly, even if you came here to drive the Redwood Highway, it would be worth it. The trees are literally GIANT.
Mendocino, California –
Coastal towns are kind of my favorite, can you tell? Come and stay for dinner with a view. Stopping here would fit well if you’re driving the coastline from San Francisco to Eureka.
And that sums up the list, hope you enjoyed and hope you have an epic road trip in northern California soon!
